Resisting resistance training

It’s the most overlooked type of training in regard to body fat loss especially by women.  The benefits of resistance training goes beyond body fat loss; it helps prevent and combat osteoporosis, gives you more strength, increases mobility and strengthens joints, tendons and ligaments.  When it comes down to exercises to reduce body fat, resistance training is your best ally.  Weight training and strength training are other popular names for this exercise. But I came to realize early in my career that weight or strength training didn’t sound too appealing to the majority of my female clients.  Many women still believe in the myth that this type of training will bulk them up like a body builder.  That’s right – I said MYTH, even though bodybuilders have to weight train to look that way, it’s impossible for females to build those physiques without using anabolic steroid drugs.  Those huge muscles are built because of the hormone called testosterone.   It’s an anabolic hormone meaning that it makes things grow, especially muscles.  This hormone is also called the male hormone and is obviously way more abundant in men than in women. That is why men look like men and women look like women. Resistance training will lead to some muscle growth in women giving them a toned body, not a bulky look like it does to men.  I hope I shattered this myth once and for all.

When it comes down to fat loss progressive resistance training is a crucial part of what I call THE FORMULA.  Growing and or maintaining muscle can only happen if the body is presented with a challenge or a resistance.  The saying “use it or lose it” definitely applies to muscles.   Growth and or maintenance of muscles, is a crucial part of the formula.  This is because muscles are the only things that burn fat as fuel in your body.

Progressive resistance training coupled with the right food will lead to more fat burning while you are at rest than any other exercise.  So if you are at the gym and you tend to bypass the weight room, chances are that your attempts are going to lead you to frustration.
